There are many ways to be an activist in one's workplace. I've written about it here: https://ojs.library.ubc.ca/index.php/newproposals/article/view/419…
There is a kind os social conservatism in which people will say "I would be more outspoken, but ...." citing a climate of fear. In this blog I suggest its a fear of commitment. http://charlesmenzies.blogspot.com/2016/03/climate-of-fear-or-fear-of-commitment.html…
From being an untenured junior faculty, though that mid zone of associate, and to becoming a full - I have been consistent in taking decisive, consistent, and outspoken views. One might disagree with my actions, but you can't deny I have acted while others remain silent.
On the first May of my term on UBC's Board I had this to say about the corporate control. I'd hoped that the #NDP would change things. They didn't (not really). http://charlesmenzies.blogspot.com/2017/05/may-day-reflections-on-ubcs-board-of.html…
A little bit latter I then argued that it was time to change the nature of the participants on the Board - get away from the business & corporate types by having at least 50% from non-business backgrounds. (nothing happened). http://charlesmenzies.blogspot.com/2017/06/time-to-change-up-university-boards-of.html…
And then again in 2018 I argued that we needed to change the faces on the board to better reflect our society. http://charlesmenzies.blogspot.com/2018/04/time-for-new-faces-on-ubcbog.html…
There are also tactics to consider. When one acts as a party of one in a corporate controlled board one can either be obstructionist or minimize the deleterious effects of corporate control. One need be strategic in one's tactical deployment. http://charlesmenzies.blogspot.com/2019/08/the-point-of-complaint.html…

At the end of the day I remember the old fisherman unionist who told me "be a good worker, that way when they fire you it's because of your organizing, not your shitty behaviour."
